My Daily Bible Verse Calendar

Over the holidays I received a beautiful scheduling calendar book for 2009 and wished I had a use for it (all my scheduling is done online). When our assignment for memorizing a Bible verse every day for this year came, I thought that was the perfect use for this scheduling book. So I have been writing my verse(s) each day in the large areas provided for daily activities. It is just the right size (6-1/2 x 9") to carry with me and I often pull it out to read through the verses during the day. It's been enlightening to see the line of thought that appears through several days' verses.
An additional blessing that has occurred is that I've found that I'm also memorizing more references from Science & Health and Prose Works along with the Bible verses. I am so grateful for this assignment - it really is making the Bible come alive for me!

An employment decision

I want to express my gratitude for this years' assignment and the Bible verses that helped put my thought at ease...........
We recently had to let go of one of our employees.This was a very difficult decision for us to make when so many are losing jobs, and we feel like we tried everything to help him,including meetings,rides to and from work, and letting him stay on after repeated offences.
Through much prayer I came to realize that we were guilty of enabling him to continue in mistakes and it wasn't right or fair for us,him,or our other employees.
S&H 327:22" Fear of punishment never made man truly honest."
S&H 6:3 "Divine Love corrects and governs man. Men may pardon,but this divine Principle alone reforms the sinner.
So when the offences were repeated again--- it was time to stop and let"wisdom point out the path."And this is when the two Bible verses came to my thought----
Loose him,and let him go"John 11:44
and "Let no strife remain between me and thee............for we be brethren."Gen.13:7
What a relief....it was taken right out of my hands and I felt such peace.
In loosing him in my own thought I had to separate any false traits that didn't belong to God's man ( him or anyone else.) And to know our life was in God's hands and that we continue to be about "our Father's business."
So--he was told and his first reaction was anger, but later that day he came in to collect his belongings and said he wanted no hard feelings(no strife) and that he already had another job lined up.

Like Daily Manna

I also wanted to comment on the note you sent out about the daily Bible verses--this year's assignment. I'm still loving it!!! I was also glad to see some clarification that it was more of a daily manna kind of thing, rather than, Okay, so on March 7, you should be able to recite all 66 verses you've memorized so far. It's going for the fresh inspiration, using it as our daily bread, and getting some new bread for a new day. I've pulled a lot of verses from the Lessons, and sometimes I've been using the verses mentioned in Sentinel or Journal articles--just whatever resonates with me. And I so appreciate that it does handle the suggestions of limitation or distraction--and that it really is helping us fulfill the 6th Tenet.

2009 Assignment-Replies and Insights

I love our assignment for the year. I try to keep with me throughout the day the 'thought for the day' fm spirituality.com and I definitely have seen a continued softening of my responses to every situation and person in my life. In class instruction you told us that the Bible would be a common ground of communication when speaking w/ non CS's. So right off the bat I see that this assignment will enhance my vocabulary and give me a wonderful push to keep those lines of communcation open w/ all whom I come in contact.

Thanks! This helps me feel that I'm doing okay even though I'm not getting one every day, but sometimes one a week or every few days. I am working on applying it daily.

I'm thinking constantly about the Truth and so many BIBLE verses, but might not always have them memorized correctly, but am trying and do read the Bible more than I ever had before and of-course Science and Health, the Lesson, periodicals, etc. are sooo wonderful,too! Thanks for the encouragement.

Here's an idea. I have been writing down the KJV scripture verse for the day, followed by either Moffatt or JB Phillips or another translation, to bring out depth of meaning.

Dearest one,

Some pupils are ignoring or feeling challenged by this year’s assignment to memorize a Bible verse daily. The edited dialogue with one pupil might be helpful….


From pupil:
I have to admit that I have not had much success with the memorization and use of a specific verse each and every day. While I'm nowhere close to being a 'Bible Scholar', I have been somewhat of a Bible reader most of my life. Every morning a verse comes to me and I ponder it. Sometimes the same verse comes to me multiple times, sometimes on consecutive days or sometimes popping up frequently, sprinkled through my experience. I work with it when it comes to me, then ... poof .... the day is over and I realize that I have not been consistent in my work through the day.

It came to me that consistency is an issue that needs to be given deeper consideration. I am consistent in my study of Christian Science in that I do it every day. Then it came to me that consistency means ONENESS, oneness with God.

So, if my oneness with God is the truth, and I know that it is, why am I feeling inconsistent? It's the subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, suggestion that life, truth, intelligence and substance is in matter! Ah ha! It's aggressive mental suggestion - it's animal magnetism. Now I understand why it is so important to understand and meet animal magnetism head on until we see its nothingness. I remembered a video I saw of the board of directors of TMC - last year or the year before? - where one of the members said that people always ask what more they can do to help the movement and the world. The board member said 'handle animal magnetism'. I've thought about it ever since, but realize now that thinking about handling it and actually handling it are two different things!

You have gotten the essence of the assignment. Through the effort of memorizing a Bible verse daily, we actually overcome the limitations of animal magnetism. Only through reflecting divine Mind can we fulfill this assignment. The human mind might say it is unable to memorize Bible verses or keep them in thought during the day. Human will, which is animal magnetism, rebels and says I can’t, I don’t want to, I won’t try. As you point out, this assignment is demonstrating your oneness with God, that divine Mind is your only Mind. It’s not human effort but acknowledging that Mind is able and you are able as Mind’s reflection. Whether you memorize a different verse each day or stay with one verse for a few days, we fulfill this assignment by relying on God for help, by reflecting the divine Mind, and by demonstrating our oneness with God. Then we actually are handling aggressive mental suggestions of limitation and the distractions of the world, rather than just thinking about doing so. “And we solemnly promise to watch and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus…” (Sixth Tenet)

2009 Association Assignment

This year may well prove to be a pivotal year in US history and perhaps world history. May I humbly recommend that we all memorize one Bible verse each day during 2009. This will be your assignment in preparation for the Association meeting and through the entire calendar year. Deepening your familiarity and use of the Bible will spiritualize your thought. It will leaven the thought of the entire world reaching across the world to Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindu and others. It will increase your ability to communicate the Science of Christianity, will attract people to your church, and will quicken healing
